PBIS Overview
What is PBIS?
The premise of PBIS is to create a safe, effective, and positive learning environment for every student and to do so by explicitly teaching behavior expectations.
A key strategy of the PBIS process is prevention. The majority of students follow the school’s expectations, but are never acknowledged for their positive behavior. Through instruction, comprehension and regular practice, all teachers and staff members will use a consistent set of behavior expectations and rules. When some students do not respond to teaching of the behavioral rules, we will view it as an opportunity for re-teaching, not just punishment.
The premise of PBIS is to create a safe, effective, and positive learning environment for every student, and to do so by explicitly teaching behavioral expectations. PBIS creates teaching and learning environments that are…
- Less reactive and harmful
- More proactive, preventive, and productive
- Address classroom management and disciplinary issues
- Improve supports for students whose behaviors require more specialized assistance
- Maximize academic engagement and achievement for all students
PBIS is divided into three tiers. Tier 1 is the universal tier with behavioral expectations and interventions that are provided to all students. Tier 2 includes targeted interventions for students who are struggling to follow the behavior expectations independently and need additional support and attention in order to do so.
